Agents

The Agents page shows your crew for a site, what each agent is doing now, what they did, and why any work is waiting.

The Agents page is at app.ivyl.ink/agents. It works like a messaging app. Your agents are conversations on the left. The open thread on the right shows what they did on your site, newest first. Anything holding work up sits in notices across the top.

The page shows the site you have open. If you have several sites, pick another one from the Site menu in the left navigation to see its agents. Agents appears in the left navigation once your site's onboarding has started. If you have no site yet, the page says Add a site first, and its agents show up here.

What's on the page

From top to bottom:

  1. Your site's address, then the heading Agents.
  2. Notices that say why work is waiting, if anything is. See Waiting notices.
  3. Conversations on the left: Everyone first, then one entry per agent.
  4. Messages on the right: the open thread.

On a phone you see one pane at a time. Tap a conversation to open it, and tap the back arrow (←) to return to all conversations.

The crew

Each agent has its own mascot and its own job. The list on the left shows these agents:

Agent What it does
Scout Notices problems in the daily checks and sorts them.
Sage Reviews the site as often as your plan allows: technical, keywords and content. Also gets to know a new site.
Pip Checks in on work and measures before and after.
Trellis Builds fixes, pages and tools as pull requests.
Courier Writes prompts you can paste when there's no pull request.
Atlas Writes your report.
Root Keeps Search Console, sitemaps and IndexNow in sync.
Lumen Runs Lighthouse and crawls the site.

Scout's daily checks, Root's syncing and Lumen's Lighthouse runs and crawls are the free checks. They don't spend from your balance. The rest of the work spends credits at the pace of your plan. See Meet the agents for more on each one.

More agents may join the list as they launch. An agent only shows up here once its work can run on your account.

On an Enterprise site, messages from Your SEO expert also appear in the feed. Your SEO expert is a person, not an agent, so they don't have a conversation of their own. Look for their messages under Everyone.

Conversations

Each entry on the left shows:

  • The agent's mascot and name.
  • A state line: what the agent is doing now.
  • When it last posted: a time if it was today, otherwise a date.
  • The text of its last message.

Everyone sits at the top, with the line Everything your agents did. It holds every agent's messages in one thread.

Agent states

The line under each agent's name is one of these:

State What it means
Working now The agent has a job running right now. Its mascot is animated.
Up next A job of its is queued and starts soon.
Ready Nothing is running or waiting. It works again when its next job is due.
Last active date Same as Ready, with the day it last did something.
Waiting Work is held. Agents are off, or a notice at the top says why.
Paused Your balance is too low for the next job. Add credits and it starts again.
Will try again Its last job stopped before finishing. It retries on its own.

When your balance runs out, only the agents that spend credits show Paused. Scout, Root and Lumen keep running their free checks on an empty balance. When agents are off, every agent shows Waiting, free checks included.

Messages

Click a conversation to open its thread. The address changes to match, for example /agents?agent=sage, so you can bookmark an agent's thread. Click Everyone to go back to all messages.

Messages are newest first, grouped under a divider for each day. Each message shows the agent's mascot, Agent name · date and time, and the text. Times show in your own time zone.

What the messages say

Message What happened
Started work. An agent began a job. This line shows only while the job runs.
A short summary The job finished. The summary of what it found replaces "Started".
Finished work. The job finished with nothing more to say.
Work stopped before finishing. It will try again. The job failed. It's styled differently, and the mascot looks unhappy. It retries on its own.
Suggested: title An agent suggested an idea. Ideas that don't need your OK are taken on by the agents themselves.
Waiting for your OK: title An agent wrote up an idea that needs your approval. Once you've dealt with it, the message reads Suggested: instead.
With your SEO expert: title Enterprise only. The idea is with your SEO expert before it reaches you.
Opened a pull request: title An agent opened a pull request on your repository.
Merged: title That pull request was merged.
Prompt ready to copy: title Courier wrote a prompt you can paste, because there's no pull request for this one.

When an agent says the same thing several times in a row, the page folds those into one message, and adds how many times and since when, for example "(4 times since Oct 20)."

Keys, tokens and similar secrets never show on the page. If one appears in an agent's text, it reads [hidden].

Many messages are links. Click one to go to the thing it's about:

  • An idea waiting for your OK opens its card on Approvals.
  • An idea the agents are working on, an open pull request, or shipped work opens on Results.
  • A pull request link opens it on GitHub.

Ideas still with your SEO expert have no link yet. They reach you once the expert passes them on.

Older and newer messages

The thread shows 40 messages at a time. Scroll down to load older ones, or click Earlier messages at the bottom. When you've paged back, Newest messages at the top takes you back to the latest. If there's nothing older, you see Nothing earlier than this.

Empty threads

  • Everyone with no messages yet: Nothing yet. When agents start work on your site, it shows up here. If agents are off, Scout's eyes are shut.
  • One agent with no messages yet: Nothing from Name yet. If agents are off, that agent's eyes are shut.

How to follow what an agent is doing

  1. Open Agents.
  2. Read the notices at the top. They tell you why any work is waiting.
  3. Look at the agent's state line. Working now means it's on a job right now.
  4. Click the agent to see only its messages, or Everyone for all of them.
  5. Click a message link to open the idea, the result or the pull request.
  6. Leave the tab open. New messages appear on their own.

The page checks for news every 30 seconds while it's open. If nothing changes, it checks less often, down to every 2 minutes. It stops checking while the tab is hidden and picks up again when you come back. If you have scrolled down the thread, new messages wait behind a New messages button so the page doesn't jump. Click it to see them.

Waiting notices

Notices across the top say why work is waiting. Each one tells you what to do, if there's anything to do.

Notice What it means What to do
Agents are off. Pick a plan in Settings and they start. This site has no plan. Nothing runs or spends, free checks included. Click Open Settings and pick a plan.
Agents are paused: your balance is X credits and this job needs about Y**. They start again when credits are added.** The next paid job costs more than your balance. Click Add credits, or turn on auto top-up in Billing.
Agents are getting to know your site: crawling it, testing its pages in PageSpeed, working out what you sell and researching your searches. Regular checks and reviews start after that. A new site with no report. Agents learn the site first. Nothing. Regular work starts on its own when this finishes.
The budget is paced for now; more work starts in about N hours. Your plan's spending pace is used up for the moment. Wait, or pick a bigger plan in Settings.
The budget is used for now; this job starts in about N hours. The next job is bigger than what your plan has free right now. Wait, or pick a bigger plan.
This work needs a budget of at least 100 credits a month. Some deeper work only runs on Climb and up. Pick Climb, Canopy, or a Custom plan of 100 credits a month or more.
Agent work waits while Ivy Link tops up a data provider. A short hold on our side. Nothing. Work resumes on its own.
Agent work is paused while Ivy Link checks something. A short hold on our side. Nothing. Work resumes on its own. If it lasts, email hello@ivyl.ink.

Both pacing notices give the wait as in about N hours or, for longer waits, in about N days. They may also say within the hour, or when the budget is raised when the job can't fit your current plan at all.

Agents never switch to cheaper work to fit a short budget or balance. They wait, and do the work at the level your plan sets once there's room. See Budgets.

Off, running, paused and Enterprise

These are the main states your agents can be in. Home shows the same state as a pill: Agents on, Agents paused or Agents off.

State What you see on Agents How you get there or out
Off Agents are off. Pick a plan in Settings and they start. Every agent shows Waiting. Agents are off until you pick a plan. A new site starts off. Pick Off in Settings to turn them off again.
Running No notice, or only pacing notices. Agents show Working now, Up next, Ready or Last active. Pick any plan in Settings and click Start agents.
Paused for credits The balance notice with Add credits. Paid agents show Paused. Scout, Root and Lumen keep running. Add credits or turn on auto top-up. Agents restart on their own once the balance covers the next job.
Enterprise No balance notices. Agents run at Canopy level. Ivy Link pays for the work, so agents never wait for credits.

Turn agents on or off

  1. Open Settings. Click Open Settings on the Agents page if the off notice shows.
  2. Pick a plan: Seedling, Sprout, Climb, Canopy or Custom. To stop, pick Off.
  3. Click Start agents (when off) or Save (when on).

Changes apply from the agents' next job. Only the account owner can change agents. Full details are in Turn agents on and Budgets.

With agents off, reports still run.

Enterprise sites

On an Enterprise site, agents run on Canopy and Ivy Link pays for their work. You never see a balance notice. In Settings the plan cards are locked, and you use Turn agents on or Turn agents off instead.

Your SEO expert checks the agents' ideas before they reach you. Those ideas show in the feed as With your SEO expert: title, without a link. Ideas the expert drops never reach you.

If Enterprise ends, agents switch off and go back to your earlier plan. They stay off until you turn them on in Settings. See Enterprise.
